Google just announced on its official blog that it will be bringing audio indexing to video. So what? This means that the audio content within a video will be searchable without the uploader having to add the transcript of the text. This will bring an immense amount of new searchable data.

For example, imagine that you wanted to search for video that contained the key phrase: I can see Alaska. The Google Audio Index will do this for you.

Pay that Funky Video, Whiteboy September 16, 2008

That’s right. Pay that Funky Video. With much hubub and fanfar, Sony, Intel, Philips–basically all companies with an interest in trying to protect their content (except Apple didn’t show up) announced the awful sounding “Digital Entertainment Conten Ecosystem”. DECE anyone?

In a nutshell, when you buy a video online today–it is impossible to watch it on another device that you have without having to pay for it again. Example–stream to your PC in your office and then try to stream the same show that you already paid 3.99 for on the XBOX in the family room. No go.

Companies do realize that all previous efforts that rely on Digital Rights Management have been cumbersome at best and a real pain in the behind for most. Every 6 months or so, it seems that another technology executive is put in charge of solving this problem. At the end of the day, consumers will have their movies and music when and where they want it. As fast as companies get these new technologies out to try and monetize each view or listen, there is a hoard of teenagers somewhere cracking the code and setting it free. Instead, companies should be focusing on how to get better content out faster and let the community pay for premium access to special screenings and shows.
